A Legacy of Color and Feeling: Richard Mayhew's Revolutionary Landscapes

Richard Mayhew Landscape Painting

Step into a world where landscapes breathe with emotion and color tells stories of heritage and hope. Richard Mayhew, a master artist with African American and Native American roots, didn't just paint what he saw – he captured the very soul of the land, creating "mindscapes" that continue to move and inspire collectors today.

The Art of Emotional Expression

"I internalize my emotional interpretation of desire, hope, fear, and love." - Richard Mayhew

This philosophy manifested in his work through radiant color choices and fluid forms that seemed to pulse with inner life. Where other landscape artists might paint a forest as they saw it, Mayhew painted the forest as it felt – perhaps rendering joy as golden light streaming through trees, or reflection as deep blues rippling across a mythical lake.

Born to African-American and Native American parents in Amityville, New York, he developed this distinctive approach that went far beyond mere representation. His technique was remarkably intuitive – he would begin without sketches or photographs, allowing the paint itself to guide the emergence of form and feeling on canvas, each brushstroke carrying the weight of lived experience.

A Voice in the Civil Rights Movement

His connection to the land ran deep, influenced by both his Native American heritage and his experiences as a Black artist during the Civil Rights era. As a member of Spiral, the influential collective of African-American artists formed in response to the March on Washington, Mayhew brought a unique perspective to the group's mission of advancing Black artists in America's segregated art world.

His paintings spoke to healing collective trauma through color and form, transforming historical pain into visual poetry. While driving across America, he would contemplate the histories embedded in the soil: "Their blood is in the soil of the United States. So that's part of nature."
