Edward Clay Wright

Edward Clay Wright Jr., known professionally by Clay Wright, is a native of Denver Colorado, and a 1970 graduate of Manual High School. He is largely self-taught, though he briefly attended the Colorado Institute Of Art, The Art Students League of Denver, and majored in art at the University Of Colorado at Boulder. Always one with a unique sense-of-humor, he refers to himself as being "99.9% self-taught-----like fine gold," and without conceit, refers to himself, and his art as, "Denver's best kept secret."

Farewell

The first time that I saw, "Farewell", by Edward Clay Wright, it was being displayed at, The First Baptist Church of Hampton, VA. , as an excellent entry, in their annual Art Exhibition (Christmas 2013?). My heart fluttered, in awe and something like loving pride, flooded every part of my chest. It was approx. 16x20 and tastefully framed. The scene instantly moved me, on a visceral level. It is pristinely, unashamedly romantic. For far too long, our black ancestors have been portrayed and characterized, in photos and art as perpetually burdened, dirty and inevitably disenfranchised, still enslaved. This though, this masterpiece is Romance. This moving piece of Mr. Wright's art, characterized black dignity, intelligence, and the fight for Freedom. The freedom, to take part in one's own destiny, to love, to protect one's own and to feel protected by one's own. Our hero sits astride his steed, just as much a knight, of long ago as Lancelot of the Arthurian legend. This is a man, capable of openly, unashamedly, giving his heart, his sinewed muscle and strength, "equal to", in every way. This husband is willing to die, if provident necessity beckons, but Death has not called for this hero. He will return to her and she will be carried within his heart, into every battle. They both, believe that he will return. They are unashamed to pray and depend on God's promise. One day, in triumph, he will return. War and travel weary, his horse held in a light canter; he will undoubtedly return to his faithful, Sepia-skinned lady, bringing," Black Freedom's Victory", with him. Until then, she will keep a bright candle lit, ensconced in the front bedroom window of their house, that he built, for her, to bear his free-born children in. His bed, whose frame he hand-carved, with hope. Ahhh! Yes, but the brighter light will burn in the secret of her heart, that beats in pledge, only for him. And for now, only...., "Farewell". For now, I could only afford a print. I bought that about 4 years ago. One day, perhaps I will be able to purchase the original. Until then, I can dream. What a Gift. Thank you, Mr. Wright. God bless you and yours.

Buffalo Soldier Salute

As a veteran of the 6th Air Cavalry Brigade, this picture depicts the many "Farewells" I had to make with my wife & family. I can't wait to have it framed and displayed with my other cavalry art pieces. Thank you from quality of your product. "Always Out Front". A Former Cav Officer
