Description

An African American historical poster that pays tribute to the life and legacy of Susie King Taylor. She is remembered as a teacher and a nurse. Susie King Taylor is noted in history as the first African American Army nurse. She served diligently during the Civil War but like most African American nurses was never paid for her service. Taylor published a memoir of her wartime experiences and was the first Black woman to do so and she even opened a school in Georgia where she became the first African American to openly teach formerly enslaved Africans.

The words on the poster read:

“Susie King Taylor was the first African American Army nurse. She tended to a Union Army Regiment that primarily consisted of escaped slaves from South Carolina and Florida.  After the Civil War, Taylor was the only African American woman to publish a memoir of her wartime experiences and the first to teach former slaves openly in Georgia."

This work of art measures 17 inches x 11 inches (paper size) and 17 inches x 11 inches (image size). It is printed on high-quality glossy paper with a weight of 230 GSM.
