Description

Drenched in early afternoon sunlight and crowned by early summer foliage and sweeping high clouds, two smartly dressed young women stop to rest after a lovely bike ride along the water’s edge. They stand proudly just shy of Eaglevale Bridge and Ladies Pond situated along Central Park’s west wall in New York City. The water sparkles and their new bicycles gleam in the midday sun as they prepare to turn back for the second leg of their journey. Eaglevale Bridge, shown in the background, was built around the turn of the century to carry pedestrians and horse-drawn carriages over Ladies Pond, a private pond created for women to ice skate during the winter. The bridge still exists today, however, in 1936 the pond was filled in because it frequently flooded during and after heavy spring and summer rains.

“Eaglevale Riders” by Kadir Nelson is part of a series of paintings celebrating the Harlem Renaissance era. Known for depicting historical subjects, Nelson pays tribute to young women of days past, and the spirit of female independence.

Kadir Nelson

Kadir Nelson began drawing at the age of three, displaying artistic acumen before he could write or spell. “I have always been an artist,” Nelson explains. “It’s part of my DNA.” At age eleven, Kadir Nelson was apprenticed by his uncle Michael Morris, an artist and art instructor. “My uncle gave me my foundation in art,” says the artist. Kadir Nelson experimented with several different media and later began painting in oils at the age of sixteen under the encouragement and tutelage of both his uncle and high school art teacher. He began entering his paintings in art competitions and ultimately won an art scholarship to study at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY. Upon graduating with honors, Kadir Nelson began his professional career as an artist, publishing his work and receiving commissions from publishers and production studios such as Dreamworks, Sports Illustrated, Coca-Cola, The New York Times and Major League Baseball, among others.
