Description

For far too long, she had worn a mask, concealing her true self in response to societal expectations, gender biases, and racial prejudices. One day, overwhelmed by the weight of this facade, she could no longer endure the burden; the price of "acceptance" had become too steep. Resolute, she chose to confront reality regardless of the consequences. She began to peel away the mask that obscured her identity. Though the journey was fraught with emotional turmoil, marked by self-doubt and fear, she embraced parts of herself she had long tried to hide.

With each step forward, she felt increasingly empowered. Embracing her true self, she discovered resilience, strength, and a connection with the divine and her ancestors that she had never known existed. She found a newfound freedom as she shared her authentic identity with the world. Her courage to be unapologetically herself illuminated a light within, proving that the greatest power lies in embracing who we truly are.

Laurie Cooper

Laurie Cooper is a Philadelphia-based artist known for her evocative "Face Reality" series. Her artwork features striking images of individuals shedding masks, symbolizing liberation and self-discovery. The series explores racial, gender, and spiritual themes, with powerful depictions of Black men and women removing white masks, revealing emotions of shame, agony, and anger. Cooper's educational journey includes a bachelor's degree from the University of the Arts and a master's in Fine Arts from the University of Pennsylvania.

ABSOLUTELY LOVE this piece! It’s BEAUTIFUL and the message speaks volumes. Picture arrived intact and the frame was very nice and complimented the artwork. Definitely not cheap or flimsy looking. I would love to have the male piece in the same size & frame to hang right next to this one.
