The Black Panther Party for Self-Defense, founded in October 1966 in Oakland, California by Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton, emerged as a revolutionary organization focused on Black empowerment and protection against police brutality. Unlike the Southern Christian Leadership Conference led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with its integrationist goals and nonviolent protest tactics, the Black Panther Party was part of the Black Power movement with an ideology of Black nationalism, socialism, and armed self-defense. Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton met as students at Merritt College in Oakland where they developed their political consciousness. Strongly inspired by Malcolm X's teachings, they founded the Black Panther Party in October 1966, adopting the slogan "freedom by any means necessary." Wikipedia Newton served as Minister of Defense while Seale became Chairman of the party. Biography Under their leadership, the Panthers created community programs including free breakfast for children, health clinics, and educational initiatives that continue to inspire community activism today.
